Hawaii 2016

Big Island and Oahu

Bird of Paradise.  They are everywhere and even though you've seen them before, they still impress with their lines and pops of color.

Big Island swimming in an impressively cold waterfall on a hot day.

Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens, Big Island.

USS Arizona Memorial, Honolulu, Oahu. When the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in WWII, the USS Arizona sank in the harbor, entombing 1,102 men. Bodies were not recovered, as all hands were needed for the war effort.

USS Bowfin, Honolulu, Oahu. Quarters inside WWII submarines are compact and tight, with sleeping bunks directly adjacent to machinery.

USS Bowfin, Honolulu, Oahu. Cooks produced a lot of food for the 80 man crew from a small galley.

Honolulu, Oahu.  A little bird with clever camouflage.

Honolulu, Oahu.  Longboards on Waikiki Beach.

Big Island. Near the end of the day.

Big Island. Volcano National Park. Kilauea volcano at night, from about 1/2 mile away.

Big Island. Volcano National Park. Kilauea volcano at night, from about 1/2 mile away. You can see the lava trails on top of the volcano.

Big Island. Lest you think Hawaii is all green lusciousness, rest assured it is not. See the tiny people walking across this lava field? The field has been there a while, as there is the beginning of vegetation, but it will be years and years before it turns green.

Big Island. A road has been laid across a lava field.

Big Island. Coffee beans ripen in Kona.
